Mufakose Community Club in Full Swing!
December 26, 2016
The months of January and February have been very eventful for us here at ZimboPy. 2017 marked the official launch of ZimboPy Coding Clubs as we saw 25 girls from Mufakose, a high density suburb located in the bustling city of Harare, march into our first community center. The blue and grey building welcomed 2 groups of girls recruited from the surrounding area with the help of schools, social workers and word of mouth. The first group of girls comprises of girls between 13-19 years, the majority of whom come from a local public high school. On the first day of classes these girls was very excited and argued with our club instructor, Tariro, that they should have meetings 5 times a week! We compromised and settled for 3; Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (almost all of our students in the first group attend schools that are so large they have to follow a system called ‘hot seating’ and therefore only attend classes in the afternoon.) Due to the large sizes of their schools many of our members will have never had the opportunity to use a computer before. Computer classes are often reserved for a select group. We therefore made sure to incorporate basic computer skills in our first few sessions.
Following the recruitment of the first group our team worked with a local non-profit to identify a small group of girls who were unable to finish high school due to difficult home situations. These girls arrive for lessons in the afternoon following the first group and have been moving through the curriculum with such speed and determination, we were genuinely surprised! We look forward to them becoming well versed in Python soon.
